WEST COAST TRACK WORK.
WANGANUI AND HAWEBA GALLOPS. FERNDEN HITTING OUT IN GOOD STYLE. STAR AREA IN FORM FOR MASTERTON. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, this day. With the near approach of the Masterton, Wellington, and Waverley meetings local track work is becoming interesting. This morning the track was in good order. Whenuatonga was given useful work. This gelding is looking in good shape, and C. Gordon will soon win a' race with aim. A new addition to Gordon's team is the seven-year-old gelding by Quarantine. He is a big fellow, but looks as if ho will prove useful. He ia being schooled over hurdles, and is shaping well for a beginner. M. Gardiner has the Australian-bred gelding Fernden in great heart, and tho sou of Reclfern will be taken to Masterton next week. He is engaged in both the- Lansdowne Hack, of six furlongs, and the Electric Hack, of five and a half furlongs. Fernden has been hitting out in good stylo on tho track recently. Star Area, who is to be a runner in the Masterton Handicap next week, was given a run over five furlongs this morning, in company with Count Palatine. They finished together in 1.4 2-5. Star Area doing it nicely. They ran the last half mile in 51 Is. Talisker and Vcrtigern are both looking in splendid order after their trip to Auckland. Auctioneer, Just An Idea, and Valma were companions in a five-furlong spin. Tho first-named had a bit the best of the jump off, hut Just An Idea finished on terms with him. They ran the first quarter in 2445, and the full distance in 1.4 2-5. War Flame slipped over half a mile nicely in 03s. Royal Acre has been shaping well in some' schooling essays over hurdles, in view of his engagement at Waverley on Labour Day. Potoa form is going along well, and should be in good trim f'JV the Masterton meeting. Last Tuesday Civility produced a colt foal to Grand Knight. At Hawera yesterday Rossferry and Calamine went six furlongs together in--1.10, finishing on even terms. Annoycr and Partaga were- companions over five furlongs. Tho former had tho better of the start, and ran the full distance in 1.4 2-5, with Partaga half a length behind. Partaga had much the worst of the weights, and it was a good performance on his part. A good work-out was done by Mendip, Orazone, and Paitonu over seven furlongs. They ran three furlongs in 38s, half a milo in 51s, and the full journey in 1.31 2-5. Orazono was half a length ahead of the other pair. Golden Flower gave Animated two lengths' start and a, beating over half a mile run in 50.< Vivo and Just So were companions in half a mile- spin, finishing abreast, and registering 50 l-ss. ' Varsity slipped over half a mile in pleasing stylo in 50s, the first quarter in 255.
