CAULFIELD CUP.

NIGHTMARCH SCRATCHED. BUT PAQUITO WILL COMPETE. SYDNEY, October 10. The following scratching were posted at Melbourne to-day: Caulfield Cup: Karuina (10.5S a.m.) ami Nightmarch. Toorak Handicap: Pecunia, Hoyal Flavour. The Cup candidate Sonic Quality arrived from Adelaide. Merab, Lady Adelaide and the two-year-old Comic Song have also arrived. Black Duchess worked ,at Caulfield today and looks well. W. Duncan rides Standard Bearer, High Syce, Limber Up and Highland at Cnulfield on Saturday. Sensations were caused in racing circles to-day by the scratching of Karuma from the Caulfield Cup and the announcement that the New Zealand horse Paquito is to go to Melbourne to compete in that event. The latter news is the subject, of favourable comment in all parts of the Commonwealth. Since August 1 New Zealand-trained horses now here have won 15 races at metropolitan and provincial meetings, also 14 seconds and 11 thirds. RED HECKLE RETURNING TO FORM. Red Heckle ran second in the sprint even at Wingauit yesterday, and it should not be long before this gelding is at his best. He only contested half a dozen races last year and won two, including the Great Northern Derby. He was only out of a place on one occasion, and as he is better over a distance than a sprint course his effort yesterday in finishing second to the smart sprinter Silver Paper was most encouraging. Eed Heckle is worth bearing in mind for , longer distance events in the near future.
