SWORDFISHING PRACTICES.
QUESTION OF CRUELTY. (By Telegraph,—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to-day endorsed tho views of the Auckland Society on the use of tho triple hook for swordfishing, and also the uso of live bait. The Auckland society said the view* of Mr. Zane Grey and those of the animal societies were diametrically opposed. Mr. Grey looked at the matter from the so-called sporting point of view, whereas the societies were concerned with the degree of cruelty involved in the practice of playing the fish. There could bo no question that cruelty existed, but the Auckland committee was of opinion that the time was not opportune for tho societies in New Zealand to take action in the matter. The committee was of opinion that the uso of live bait should bo prohibited.
