GALLANT RESCUE.
SAVING A DROWNING XAD.
ROYAL HUMANE MEDAL,
An interesting ceremony took place at a meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening, when a large number of resident? were in attendance to see tho presentation of the Royal Humane Society's medal to Mr. Charles Laxton.
The local representative of the society, Mr. J. E. Cowell, brought the medal, and related that last December, while Mr. Laxton was at Opotiki, he saw a young man named Walter Wilkins in difficulties while surf-bathing. At great risk to his own life, for ho was seized by the drowning lad, he managed to get him ashore, and the Royal Humane Society, to whom the whole facts were reported, judged him well worthy to receive their highly-valued medal. Mr. Cowell asked the chairman of tho board to present it to Mr. Laxton.
Mr. Jones expressed his great pleasure in knowing that a resident of Mount Roskill had so signally distinguished himself, and he hoped he would enjoy a long life of further usefulness. He congratulated him on performing such a brave deed at the risk of his own life.
