NOTES FROM WAIKATO.
HORSES FOR AVONDALE. PADDON GOING WELL. A Tinker's team for Avonclalc will comprise I'addon, Mervctte, Ruling Chief, Kaha, and tlie two-year-okl Iniamint; R. A. Edwards will take Flying Juliet, Indolent, and Prairie King; Glena Bay and Macroom will be the representatives • of M. J. Carroll's stable, while J. F. Tutehen will have Master Roley and Eraser 011 the scene for the week-end racing. Paddon is in good order for his Avonda lo Clip engagement. The Archiestown gelding has been given plenty of long work of late, and has hit out with great freedom. He looks in excellent heart, and it will surprise if ho is not in the picturo on Saturday. Prairie King, a candidate in the firstclass division of tlio Maiden Plate at Avondalo 011 Saturday, is a three-year-old by King Nassau—Lady Lilac, in R. A. Edwards' team. Prairie King has not yet raced in public. He has shown some speed on the tracks, but there is little prospect of him running out seven furlongs on anything he has shown 011 the tracks. Gay Duke is to contest the first division of the Maiden Plato on Saturday, while the Lord Quex three-year-old, a member of M. J. Carroll's team, also stands his ground in the Guineas. Gay Duko is not a good beginner, and the indications are that ho will require a good deal of racing before he is fully prepared.
Mangani, the- Grand National Hurdles winner, will race in the open hurdles at Avondale on Monday. He lias not been at To Rapa since his return from Riccarton, but is trained privately at Gordonton. It can be taken for granted that he will bo ill good trim for his coming engagement.
Glena Bay and Master Roley are Te Rapa candidates who will contest the Kingsland Hurdles at the Avondale meeting. The former ran second at Marton, whilo Master Roley filled a similar place at the Pakuranga fixture. Both horses are well. R. E. Thomson will ride Glena Bay, while R. Syme will be on Master Roley on Saturday.
Imamint, the Catmint —Ea Arolia filly, who is to contest the Avondale Stakes on Saturday, is a sturdily built juvenile. The fact that she has not had as much racing as some of her opponents will bo against her. Imamint ran third in a division of the parade at Ellerslie last month, and promises to prove useful.
Fraser, an acceptor for the second division of the Maiden Plate, showed some promise as a two-year-old. The Raceful —Miss Rose lands gelding, who has had no racing this season, may find tho journey a shade far for him, although he must have some prospect.
Merve.tte has not done much fast work on tho tracks so far this season. The Lueullus—Brayton mare looks well, and has come through a good deal of solid pace work. She may require some racing before she is at her best, however.
Luminary, an acceptor for the hurdles on Saturday, is in W. J. McLean's team at Cambridge. In his only race in public over the obstacles, at the Auckland winter meeting, Luminary fell at the second fence from home. The Lay Comet —Thurnlino gelding cannot be recommended, although ho may do better than public form indicates.
Flying Juliet is to have her first start of the new season in the Flying Stakes at Avondale on Saturday. The Romeo— Penella mare did most of her racing over middle distances last season. Judging by her displays on the track during the past week she has lost some of her brilliance. She can have little chance on Saturday against the more seasoned candidates down to appear.
Mat-room, who is in the chief sprint event on Saturday, showed very little form last season, during which she won only one race, tho sprint at Matamata. Tho 'Archicstown—Lady, Gwendoline maro has been executing fair work on the tracks of late, and may do better this season if she stands up to training.
Indolent ran some good races lust season without having the best of luck in some of his efforts. It is not in liis favour that he is a slow beginner. H. A. Edwards has been working the General Latour-Whitc Sox gelding for some weeks. He has been making good progress and it should not be long before he is ready to display his best.
