LITTLE GIRL'S DEATH.
KNOCKED-DAWN BY MOTOR CHARGE AGAINST DRIVER. EVIDENCE GIVEN BY CHILD. : As a sequel to the death of a child of three years and a-half, from injuries received through being knocked down by a motor car in' Lucerne Road, Remuera, on the. afternoon of April 19 last, the driver of the car, Francis Clarence Beresford Bower, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Bolice Court to-day, charged with negligently driving, thereby causing the death of the child, Diana Victoria Menzies. The inquest was the hearing of the charge were taken together. Chief Detective' Hammond appeared for the police, Mr. Wills represented accused, and Mr. R. R. Bell watched the proceedings on behalf of deceased's parents. A schoolgirl, Ruth Wiles, aged 13, said she saw Diana Menzies, her sister Bar? bara, and another child playing on the footpath in Lucerne Road about 4 p.m, Barbara ran across fthe street, and Dianq, followed her. The car, driven by Power, was in. the middle of the road travelling at about 40 miles per hour. The child, was struck, one front wheel passing over her body. Power tried to dodge the child. Witness said Power did not stop, and made no attempt to do so. Another witness estimated the speed of the car at 30 miles per hour. (Proceeding.)
