FLASHED A TORCH.
BUSY BURGLARS.
AT WORK IN REMUERA.
TWO HOUSES ENTERED.
During the week-end burglars were operating in Vincent Avenue, Remuera, at least two houses being broken into. During the absence of a well-known business man and his family, thieves entered a large house on Saturday, but got little for their trouble. At 1.30 on Saturday morning Mr. George Gray, who resides with his mother at 19, Vincent Avenue, was awakened by sounds of someone trying to open the back door. Mr. Gray left his bed, picked up one of his shoes in case he might meet the prowler, and, switching on the electric light, made straight for the door. As he openeel it there was a scatter and a man ran down the side path and along the street, quickly disappearing from view. On Sunday morning Mr. Gray was surprised to find the front door wide open. Whether a thief had actually been in the house is not known. However, nothing is missing. About 2 o'clock the same morning, Mr. Woodward, an elderly, gentleman, who resides immediately opposite Mrs. Gray's house, heard someone at the rear of his dwelling. "I sleep in the front room," he told a reporter this morning, "and I was awakened to hear someone moving about near the back door. The door of my room was open and I could distinctly see the beams of light from a torch, which was flashed through the window at the other end of the passage." No attempt was made to enter Mr. Woodward's house.
