RIFLE SHOOTING.

CITY AND SUBURBS CLUB.

The first round of the Service Championship -was fired by members of the City and Suburbs Rifle Club on Saturday. There was a good attendance, and conditions were perfect. The shooting was not consistent, P. J. - Pring being the only rifleman to shoot up to form all through. He registered an easy win. At the plate practice he scored 20, the rest of the competitors tailing off. At the moving target H. W. Verrall shot brilliantly, registering 21. with three bulls and two magpies. A. Sommerville was a good second with IS. The rapid practice at 300 yards showed better results, G. G. Kelly and C. J. M. Clark scoring two points better than inners with a total of 30 each. A. Patrick was next with 26. In the snap-shooting practice at the same range P. J. Pring and G. G. Kelly finished well ahead of the rest, with scores of 27 and 24 respectively. The best aggregates were :—P. J. Pring, S4; G. G. Kelly. 66; C. J. M. Clark, 64; A. T. Patrick, 64; H. W. Verrall, 63. The two top men won a spoon each. The 300 and 500 yards ranges will be used next Saturday. AKARANA CLUB. Members of the Akarana Kifle Club held a Service shoot at Penrose on Saturday. The weather was favourable, but owing to the near approacn of tne ftoliday season the attendance was not large, especially in the senior section. Service shooting does not appear to find favour with many old shots, though it is really very interesting, and the more one studies and practices it the more attractive it becomes. It is harder work and more expensive than the ordinary deliberate target work, which probably partly accounts for its small appeal Conditions on Saturday were based on the programme at the forthcoming Trentham meeting, and included snap-shooting, running man, and tile shooting at 200 and 300 yards. The top score was ma«i by A. Walker of C section, a new member of the club, but evidently no novice with the rifle. He is rapidly qualifying for a higher grade. The top men in each section take silver spoons. Details:—
