Between 70 and 80 people assembled .in Heme Bay .Mission Hall last evening to hear Mr. F. A'deane, Reform ; candidate for-City West. It was one of'the' quietest meetings of his campaign... Mr. T: C. Webster presided.' The candidate said the' Government could riot "be blamed for.some jrien having.to,go,pff, the land. The country had reached a state of financial stability, and it was much better off than ; it. was three years ago'.-. Still carefiil administration, was .necessary—at least for a few years..' Judging by.the increase in exports' over imports it was proved, that the Government had looked after the interests of the 'farmers—rthe primary on whom New Zealand depended" so much.-' He was against too much borrowing, : because the country would ; .have : a fictitious prosperity, and those who came after would have to pay for it. Mr. Adeane- strongly criti'clsedthe Labour party's • protamine's. v . Answering questions," Mr.' Adeane said he was" not in favour of the Government employing Austrians rbnVany :public; works' when New Zealanders .were' out of work. He was entirely opposed to 9/ and 12/ per .day,as relief wages. He. would rather see 7/. for single men and; 14/- or* 15/ for marriedVmeri 5 on- 1 relief works. The itime was-notripe-for running'a .State;' lottery .-in, New Zealand,[but°ii'e was entirely in favour of telegraphing, money for investment on the tote.' r Under this i scheine '.'|the> State would get its_due share, which in turn I would be used to subsidise hospitals, ete.
