NEGLIGENT DRIVER.
SCATTERS POLICE RELIEF. AN EXCUSE THAT FAILED. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Cecil Harold Lewis was charged before Mr. Mosley, S.M. with having negligently driven a motor car along Oxford Terrace on September 10 at night. "The police relief was going out along Hereford Street," said Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick, "and as they were crossing Oxford Terrace a car rushed down on them, and they had to scatter with some promptitude to escape injury."
A statement signed by defendant was handed to the bench, "He says it was a wet night, and that his windscreen wiper was out of order, allowing rain to obscure his vision. Patrolmen say that there was no rain on that night," said the sub-inspector.
"Then his wiper would not have improved matters if it had been working," observed the magistrate. Defendant was fined £2 and costs.
