TRANSPORT BOARD.

POLLING DAY TO-MORROW. RATEPAYERS TO DECIDE. CITY AND SUBURBAN INTERESTS. Polls of the ratepayers of Auckland city, the boroughs of Mount Ed£n, Newmarket, Mount Albert, Onehunga, the road districts of Mount Wellington, One Tree Hill, Mount Roskill, the township district of Panmure, and the town board district of Ellerslie, will be held to-mor-row to decide whether or not the Auckland Transport Board Act, 1928, shall become operative. The city ratepayers will be asked to decide whether the board shall take over the tramways undertaking as a going concern from the beginning of the present financial year. Under the present legislation there is provision for" bringing in additional areas from time to time with the consent of the Minister of Public Works, and representation by ten members, six from Auckland city, and four from the other districts concerned. It is proposed that the members of the first board shall be nominated on the same basis, the members to hold office until May, 1929. The board is to have vested in it all tramways rights, within its district, and, with the exception of existing bus services, which will reta'in their present status, the board is to have exclusive control over all bus services operating in its district. The board will also have power to raise loans in the usual manner.

The polls to-morrow will be separate. Ratepayers only will be entitled to vote, this including the wives or husbands of actual ratepayers. A ratepayer will also be able to exercise a vote on each roll on which his or her name appears. In the city the principal booths will be at the Town Hall and Chamber of Commerce. Arrangements have been made for suburban ratepayers, should they desire, to record their votes at the Chamber of Commerce booth, which will be on the ground floor. Polling will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The results at the suburban booths are to be forwarded to the Mount Eden town clerk (Mr. S. Gray), who expects to be able to announce the result early in the evening.
