HOCKEY FINAL.
SOMERVILLE RETAIN KENT CUP.
DEFEAT OF UNIVERSITY.
The curtain was rung down on Saturday on Auckland hockey at the Eemuera grounds when the final for the Kent Cup was decided. The contesting teams were Somervillc (holders) and University. A hard fast game resulted in a victory for Somerville by 7 goals to 2. The grounds were hard but played well, but the standard of play was not as high as expected. The students were certainly disorganised through being a man short, but there was never any doubt of the winners' superiority in all departments. The win enables Somerville to establish a record by winning the grade championship, Devonport Shield and Kent Cup, a performance never previously recorded by any team. Another performance is that during the six years of the Kent Cup competition, Somerville has won the trophy upon each occasion. In Saturday's game University showed up well in the first half, when Seccombe and Peace got goals for Somerville, and Don one for 'Varsity. After the breather, however, Somerville took charge, E. Watts adding three goals and Seccombe two, while another was scored for 'Varsity by Hamilton.
LADIES V. REFEREES.
A hockey comedy was staged at the Remuera grounds on Saturday as a cur-tain-raiser to the Kent Cup match, when the referees (handicapped with skirts) met a team from the -Ladies' Association. The game provided a good laugh, and as a fitting reward a win by 4 goals to 3 to the referees. This marks the referees' first success.
