LABOUR DAY TROPHY.

ELIMINATION GAMES.

MARISTS' DUAL WIN.

League enthusiasts found plenty to interest them at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when five games were played in the elimination rounds for the Labour Day trophy, for competition between teams drawn from Auckland, South Auckland and North Auckland. Marists bore the brunt of the day's play, but registered wins over Huntly and Ellerslie. Victories also went to City, who downed Devonport decisively, Richmond and Ponsonby. The finals will be decided at headquarters next Saturday.

MARISTS SUPREME,

The most spirited contest of the day was provided in the clash between Marists and a thirteen from Huntly, the only country players attracted by the competition. Both teams played bright football. Marists had the better of hostilities in the initial stages, and at the spell led by 6 points to nil as the result of tries scored by Batchelor and Noble. S. Grouby wiped off three points of the deficit for the visitors soon after play was resumed, and Jones converted the try. The game waxed fast and furious in the last quarter when Huntly held the advantage of 10 —9 as the result of a try by Timms and a conversion by S. Raynor. Just on time, however, Petherick flew across at the corner for Tykes, and gave the city players victory to the tunc of 12 points to 10.

MARISTS WIN AGAIN.

Marists made their second appearance against Ellorslie, and after spasmodic efforts by the racecourse suburb men to score demonstrated their superiority. Ultimately the greens emerged victors by 11 points to 8. Brady, Moisley and Batchelor contributed tries to their well-deserved win, and Noble a penalty goal. For Ellerslie Littlewood and Capner scored tries, and Crewther kicked two goals. Tykes tired towards the end, and were hard pressed to keep their line intact.

RICHMOND SUPERIOR.

| It was some minutes before Newton and Richmond settled down, and when they did the maroons made things very lively, following a goal from a penalty, and a try scored by Davis after a passing bout. Newton got busy, but Colcbrook eventually broke ajvay to score a fine try. On the change over Hardgrave got a runaway try which was converted. Just before the final whistle Richmond attacked and Hincham scored, the board reading, Richmond 11, Newton 5.

CITY DOWN SHORE,

City proved a tough proposition for Devonport, and early took the lead in a game that was not very inspiring, thanks to two tries by Perry. The play was largely confined to. the forwards, though occasionally the backs flashed Into action In spectacular fashion. Before the first stanza was out O'Leary scored for Devonport. City forged ahead shortly after the change over, through McLaughlin finishing off a movement brilliantly begun by Cocks. Barchard made the final scores; City 11, Devonport 3, with a neat kick.

PONIES' BIG GUNS.

Ponsonby held too many guns for Point Chevalier, and won by 25 points to 13. Delgrosso opened Ponies' account with a penalty goat, and this was followed up by a try. The B graders retaliated with vigour, and a neatly manoeuvred try and a conversion brought the scores level. Just before the spell K. Peckham raced along touch to pnt western suburbs' advantage In, and make the scores: Ponsonby 8, Point Chevalier 5. In the second spell Thompson (2), Revell and Delgrosso scored for the winners, and Carroll pnd McPheraon got tries for Point Chevalier, one of which was converted by Purdy. I

A WIN FOR HUNTLY.

Huntly defeated Mount Albert thirds by 15—13 after a keen contest. Geary, Bossad and H. Ralph scored for the winners, Ralph converting each try.

SCHOOLS' FOOTBALL.

Onebunga Convent A beat Mount Albert in the knock-out semi-final by 8 points to nil. Newmarket (winners of the championship) were defeated by Otahuhu (runnersup) by 12 —10. The final between Otahuhu and Onebunga will be played next Saturday.
