ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

MOUNT EDEN.—Both Martian and Desert Gold paid less than £1 for a

Will. INQUIRER. —Reputation ran second to Warstep in the Auckland Cup in 1914.

Last week's meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will result in a loss of about £1000.

R. Olive has been engaged to ride Kawini and Mansraiti at the Waikato Hunt Club meeting next Monday, and .1. Burgess will ride Lucullent in the Waimai Hurdles at Te Rapa to-morrow.

Llewellyn is not doing any strenuous work just at present, and now that the .jumping season is almost at an end, the big fellow may be given a spell on his owner's farm until next autumn.

A maiden which has been doing good work on the Matauiata track is The Jack Jumper. Oil Saturday he will be saddled up for the first division of the Maiden and will be piloted by Carmont'c apprentice, G. Forbes.

Lineroo and Lido were given barrier practice at Jillerslie yesterday morning, and they both displayed ability in jumping away from the* tapes. These two maidens, who have not yet had a race in public, display pace in their track essavs.

E. Donovan has added to his team the five-year-old gelding Kawiti, by Adjutant from The Gift. This horse has done most of his racing up North, where a second in a maiden handicap at the Waipapakauri meeting was his best effort last season.

Hiss Alma ran a creditable third in the Ladies' Bracelet at the recent Pakuranga meeting and wil' contest a similar event at the Waikato Hunt meeting next Monday. The Adjutant mare has done a good preparation and should again run well.

J. Williamson is not hurrying Vallar in his preparation, but he will have the chestnut gelding in capital fettle for his engagements around the country meetings. Vallar is a speedy hack that should be capable of paying his way during the present season.

Kingfield ran a couple of solid races at the Avondale meeting, when he finished third in the big sprint events on each day. He is a good sprinter who has previously raced successfully on the Te Rapa track, and he is likely to show up to-morrow; more so if the going happens to be on the soft side.

The Lover has no immediate engagements, although he is going along nicely in his track work at headquarters, most of which is being executed in company with Corinax. When required to race the Romeo gelding will not be lacking in condition and his trainer, J. William" son, should have little difficulty in placing him to advantage around the country circuit.

Since he raced at Ellerslie earlier in the month Bennie has been steadily improving in condition and should be a better colt the next time he is seen out in public. Bennie. who is a very robust customer and stands any amount of work, was finishing on in good style when he ran third in the Nursery Handicap on the concluding day of the Auckland spring meeting.

Moneytize and Bulolo are both being speeded up in their training by Owner A. Potter, who has this pair of three-year-olds looking in excellent condition. In their recent sprinting tasks they have been displaying more speed than the average maiden class, and providing they go on as they are now doing should soon repay their owner for the patient policy he has been adopting with them.

In the three races that he contested la.st season as a two-vear-old, Taneriri did not display much form. However, the brother to Hoariri has been doing promising track work for some time past and is due to make his first appearance this season in the Trial Stakes at Te Eapa to-morrow. The class he will be racing against is not over-strong and he should be a possibility.

W. J. Hawkins is busy petting Gay Cockade and Ponticus readv for the country fixtures, and both these geldings have been doing short sprinting tasks of late. Cav Cockade has put on a lot of condition during the last couple of months and when he is thoroughly seasoned should be capable of showing up in hack company.

Golden Krist, who won over seven furlongs at the Avondale meeting, has trained on in a satisfactory manner during the interval and will take his place in the Claudelands Highweight at Te Rapa to-morrow. The little Nassau gelding is not a brilliant track performer; still he has been working well and his condition is first-class. He can act in any sort of ground, besides which the long straight at Te Rapa will also be an advantage to him.

Potoanui is to fulfil his engagement in the Waikato Hunt Cup. in°which event he is to be ridden by his trainer. E. C. Rae. In his first attempt over the big country Potoanui ran third to Roman Abbey and Uralla, in the Onehunga Steeplechase, decided at Ellerslie the week before last, and the experience should benefit him, in view of his comin<* contest at Cam bridge.

J. Sharkey, as usual, will pilot Importer in the Waikato Hunt Cup, in which event this promising steeplechase candidate is not harshly treated. Importer was a trifle sore as the result of his fall in the Hunters' Steeplechase at Ellerslie. but it soon wore of!' and he has been working in good style in the interval. Sharkey understands Importer thoroughly, and, as this rider is displaying more than the average abilitv as a cross-country horseman, he can be relied on to do his mouut justice.

The Lucullus filly Wye is gradually fining down in condition and promises to develop into a good-looking sort. She has been allotted a couple of easy sprinting tasks during the last week and displays abundance of speed for a novice.

Thursday and War Officer have not been required to do any serious tasks since they raced at Ellerslie, as they have no immediate engagements. They will not be racing again until the Dargaville and Whangarei meetings roll around.

Alarm, trained by C. Carmont at Matamata, will attract attention at Cambridge on Monday if only on account of his size. He is a long-striding chestnut, 17.1 and is the cut for a good steeplecnaser. Alarm raced in the Wanganui district a couple of seasons back.

The Te Rapa-trained Mervette is due to make her first appearance of the season in the Claudelands Kighweight Handicap at the Waikato meeting on Saturday. She was a useful performer last season, and her third in the Cornwall Handicap was a good effort. It would not cause any surprise to find her capturing a few decent handicaps before the country circuit is concluded.

C. Carmont, senior, is taking five of his Matamata team to Hamilton. It is intended to start four at Te Rapa, Furrie, Gold Rain, Unoco and Red Day. Alarm, Furrie, Gold Rain and Red Day will also go across to Cambridge. Most of this team was put back a little a few weeks ago through contracting colds, but Furrie and Unoco are well forward. Both are maidens .without barrier experience and may need a ra<?e or so before showing their best. They are promising. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the New Zealand Cup, forfeits for the New Zealand Derby, New Zealand Oaks, and Welcome Stakes, and general entries for the metropolitan meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, to be held at Riccarton on November 3, 5. 7 and 10. close with the secretary, Mr. F. C. Cother, Christchurch, at 8 p.m. to-day.

DARGAVILLE MEETING,

Nominations for the Dargaville meeting, to be held at Avondale on November 1 and 3, close with the secretary of the Avondale Jockey Club, Mr. A. J. Farquhar, at 5 p.m. to-day.
