GOLD TINGE BEATEN BY FIRST
MONEY.
SCRATCHINGS FOR WELLINGTON.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day.
The two-year-old Hunting Day, who ran second to Supremacy in the Avond£\lo Stakes and the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, was being generally chosen as the home youngster most likely to test Gold Tinge in the Wellesley Stakes on Saturday. Hunting Day, however, will not be a starter, as he has been left at home. He injured a foot in Auckland, and will be given time to recover. Trentham track watchers were mildly surprised this morning when tho local two-year-old First Money plainly had the advantage of the Breeders' Plate (Sydney) winner, Gold Tinge, in a sprint over half-a mile. Perhaps it would be as well not to take the gallop at its face value, for Gold Tinge—apart from doing pace work—has not done a great deal since arrival, and yesterday's wallop was his first strong try-out. He looks the sort to need solid work. At the same time he did not move so well as he did on Tuesday, and after all our two-year-old form may not be so far below what was shown in Sydney. Closely analysed the Sydney form showed Gold Tinge outstanding, but there is no reason whatever why he should not be thoroughly extended by one or more of his own countrymen. At any rate yesterday's gallop " indicated that it might not be the runaway victory that 1 is generally anticipated. J J. H. Jefferd stated on the tracks this morning that he would not have any j horses racing on the first day at the | Wellington meeting. Hunting *Day and | Knightlike will be absentees, and Star I | Stranger's only engagement at the meet- I ing is the Hareourt Cup on the second 1 day, while False Scent also is not in the first day. This leaves Joy King to contest the Shorts, but it is unlikely that he will go to the post. T. Green will ride Gold Tinge in the Wellesley Stakes. Prince Humphrey has been withdrawn from his Hareourt Cup engagement. Gaze, Blue Metal and Coon Song have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington spring meeting. Gay Ballerina has been withdrawn trom the Taita Handicap. She did not do too well on the Sydney trip.
