WHANGAREI HARBOUR.
IMPORTANT WORKS PENDING REPORT OX SILTING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Mr. J. A. Finlyason was re-elected chairman of the harbour board. In returning thanks he said the operations to be undertaken by the board during the jiexfc three or four months were of vital importance, not only to Whangarei but to the future of the whole district. Mr. John D. McKenzie was re-elected elepiiiy-cjiairman. * . The board's engineer reported that In order to determine whether silting was taking place in the dredged channel leading to the town wharf sounding* were 'carried out early last month over the v whole length of the channel dredged. His conclusion was that the great disparity in deplhs at close intervals all the way from the point of commencement to the rowing club's shed' made it c vident that silting was not 'taking place and that faulty dredging in the first instance was accountable for the variations in depth.
The engineer's report was adopted. After considering the report of Mr. P. W. Furkert on harbour development, the Harbour Board resolved that it be adopted in its entirety, and that the board complete the purchase of the wharf at Onerahi, as advised by Mr. Furkert, and that the engineer be instructed to prepare plans for the removal ef the wharf at a later stage. The engineer is also to submit a report on the requirements of cranes, bunkering,' and other matters outlined in Mr. Furkert's report, with prices and the possible date of delivery. Tho board's decision is being interpreted as not an entire endorsement of Mr. Furkert's report, as he advised the immediate removal of portion of the Onerahi wharf, jyid not an attempt to foster the bunkering trade till the Kioreroa harbour was complete. The chairman very strongly opposed anything that would hinder the development of bunkering while the major scheme was'being completed.
