MISS ROYDEN ARRIVES.
CHARMED WITH MEW ZEALAND
"YOU HAVE A DISTINCT TYPE."
Miss Maude Royden, the distinguished preacher, writer and lecturer, is charmed with New Zealand. She said so in the course of a three minutes' interview granted a "Star" representative on her arrival at the Grand Hotel from Hamilton at 1.20 p.m. to-day.
Apologising for her inability to grant a longer interview, by reason of her appointment at the Town Hall for a civic reception, Miss Royden said she thought New Zealand was a wonderful little country. "I just love it—all of it —though Christchurch is the most English town. Dunedin is a Scotch place, isn't it? Everyone told me I should freeze to death, but the weather was as balmy in Dunedin as it is in the North."
With Mr. J. W. Shaw's statement that New Zealand could not show any definite type, Miss Maude Royden emphatically does not agree. "Of course you have a type—a distinct type," she said in answer to a direct question. "Evtir so much more English than the Canadian and Australian types, and yet a type that is distinctively New Zealand. That is especially true of the women and girls. Nowhere else have I found a similar combination of domestic ability and public service. Here, in a country where domestic help is the exception, rather than the rule, you have a race of women who are imbued with a remarkable sense of public spiritedness. Women are doing all sorts of things—l am sorry they are not in Parliament—yet their attention to home life and the home is undiminished."
This evening, in the East Street Hall, Newton, Miss Royden will give an address, "Can We Set the World in Order?" Mr. A. J. Entrican will preside. To-mor-row afternoon Miss Royden will speak in the Lyric Theatre on "Peace and the British Empire," when the Hon. Geo. Fowlds will preside.
