KING'S COLLEGE, AUCKLAND.
SCHOOL SERGEANT APPOINTED
An interesting departure is being made at King's College by the appointment of a school sergeant, as in English schools. The duties of such a position are not merely what is generally known as drill, but a continuous supervision of gymnastics, physical education of backward boys, boxing, fencing, wrestling, etc., besides many disciplinary matters connected with the welfare of the boys of the school.
The board of governors has appointed to the position Sergeant Kenneth Kemp, Ist Battalion, Scots' Guards, Tower of London. Sergeant Kemp holds the certificates from the Aldershot physical training headquarters school of the British Army in gymna*?.i. *. boxing, wrestling and fencing end to his new work after seven > experience of physical training instructor of one of the Scots , Guards on duty at the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.
The: modern system of physical training in the British Army preserve! all the essential features of the older gymnastics while incorporating the freer •tyle of Swedish and Danish exercises. The setting up of backward boys is a strong feature of the system. Captain Potter, who has done excellent work as visiting instructor of gymnastics at King's College, has received assurance of the appreciation of the board and headmaster of the excellent services he has rendered for a number of year*.
