UNAUTHORISED STREET WORK MR. TTARKS EXPLAHfg, SCATHING CRITICISM.
"It is the dirtiest suburb of all Auckland's suburbs, the most bankrupt all due to muddle on the part of past administrations. The engineer has admitted tnat he has never been allowed to complete any work. For five years I have fought their battles to get efficient administration. Some of the residents have my deepest respectf^Vie7' ould not with a fort y'This was a statement made to-day Tiarka* ay °!- ° f Avondale , Mr. H. V 5 <rnen discussing a reported statement made at a meeting of the £ ma T£ meurber3 of the Avondale Borough Council last evening, when the engineer said that he was instructed by the late Mayor and Mr. W. Pendleoury, a council member now resisted in WOrk on three suets' in the borough. He (the engineer) infßm i that th ® work would *000, and only £200 had been allocated out of loan moneys. A sum of £300 had been expended and the work had now been stopped. In referring to this matter Mr. Tiarks said that the first instruction to do the work was given by Councillor Riestcrer, and the following four streets were concerned: Gilfillan, O'Neill, Bartley and Newman. The streets had got into such a condition that they were impassable for the bus services. The engineer had advised that it was useless to patch them, and the intention was to find the balance of the cost out of the general account, so that at least one permanent work would be completed. The matter did not come before the £™ nc ;! confirmation owing to the fact that tne last meetings were taken up with discussing amalgamation with the city. There was not one councillor to-day who could honestly say that he would not have confirmed the action. ♦ Hi* J ,ar j 8 , Baid that for y®*ra past the Avondale Council had been filling £4000 a y^ar 41 * ° f approlimate^ He combated a statement that the engineer had been instructed not to report to the council on the work in me four streets mentioned, 'and said mere had been no opportunity for the engiueer to have made any sucii report.
