"WON'T PAY A FINE."
WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT OUT,
A DRUNK AND HIS GINGER STOUT.
A bottle of ginger stout, value fourpence, brought to the dock at the Police Court this morning Ernest Cox (44). As well as being charged with the theft of the ginger stout, the property of Ata Ali, Cox was appearing for being drunk in Hobson Street yesterday. "I admit being drunk, but as regards the other, to the best of my knowledge I bought the bottle in Symonds Street," Cox stated. "I suppose you were drunk, and took the bottle," Mr. Hunt told him. Tlien Senior Sergeant Edwards had something to say. It was Cox's 64th appearance before the Court for various offences. He had five previous convictions for drunkenness within the statutory period of six months. That was sufficient for the magistrate. who, then, without further ado, fined accused £5, or one month's imprisonment on the first charge. On the other charge Cox was convicted and discharged. "He won't pay a fine," suggested the senior sergeant. "Well, he will have to take it out, that's all," Mr. Hunt said.
