CHESS CONGRESS.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY
RESULT STILL IN DOUBT. ONE GAME TO FINISH. Erskine has three games unfinished, on which the result depends: otherwise all games at the New Zealand chess championship tourney are concluded. Results are:— Last Round. Gyles v. Davies (queen's gambit declined). —Gyles attacked Davics on the king side and gave up a knight to continue the pressure. Some interesting play continued. In the end Gyles failed to make the best, of an intricate pawnending, and resigned.
Miller v. Severne (Ruy Lopez).—Miller attacked on the queen side, then Severne countered on the queen side and Miller was immediately on the defence, and in the melee lost the exchange and resigned on the 56th move.
Dunlop v. Roberts (Sicilian defence). — Played on orthodox lines until wholesale exchanges took place. Eventually the game was drawn, each player having two pawns, but neither could break through.
Fairburn v. Bullock (queen's pawn),— Very even play in opening. Fairburn lost a pawn and the exchange in the middle game, and Bullock had no trouble in winning withthis advantage.
Kelling v. Pleasants (Ponziani),—Krlling had the attack at the expense oi a pawn. An oversight cost Pleasants the exchange, from which he never recovered, resigning at move 41.
Moir v. Ehskine (Sicilian defence). —A hard-fought game, in which Moir was first to go away from the "book." Moir played for position in a quiet way. The game is still unfinished.
