GUILTY OF THEFT.
SALESMAN COMMITTED FOR ' ; . • SENTENCE. . (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Charged with failure to account to Nestje and the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company fon sums totalling £118 0/11, William Mawson Chammen, a salesman, 42 years of age, appeared before justices in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Evidence was given that accused disappeared on December 14. Next day a : careful ■ check was made of the stock in . the van. jfhere were a number of empty carbons and dummies, and the van appeared to. have more stock than actually it did. On the evening of December 18 went to the office •nd handed in a sum which he said re-presented-the takings for December 13. This was put in an envelope and given to a detective, and accused was handed over to the police. It was stated in evidence that the van had etock to the value of only £80 2/10, when there should have been £105 12/4. A statement was put in, signed by the accused, in Vrhich he admitted taking the money that should have been handed to the firm. He said he iad spent a lot on drink, and once he commenced misappropriating he got deeper and deeper into the mire. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
