MAIN HIGHWAY BOARD.
NORTHERN TOUR COMMENCED. INSPECTION OF MAIN ROADS. A tour of the North Island was commenced yesterday by the members of the Main Highways Board, with the object of obtaining first-hand knowledge of the conditions that prevail on the various main highways and also to discuss with the local bodies in control of the different sections the needs for the future year. At Hamilton on the 26th the Board will discuss with the Waikato County Council the steps that should be taken in regard to the stretch of eighteen miles of road from Ohinewai to Ngaruawahia-—a section that has given the County Council considerable concern for some years past. It is. expected that the Council will ask the Board to contribute all the moneys needed to keep this road in condition as a main highway, as the present allocation of the, costs is considered unduly burdensome on .the local authority. During their tour the Highways Board members will inspect the road from Tauranga to Matamata, over the Kainiai hill, and attention will be given to the question of developing this route as an outlet for the Bar of Plenty district.
