FIVE MONTHS' CRUISE.
■■■—» ■ — - — H.M.S. VERONICA RETURNS. FETED IN THE ISLANDS. An enjoyable five months' cruise among the islands of the Western Pacific ended yesterday morning with the return to Auckland of the sloop Veronica. After leaving Auckland on May 14, the warship proceeded to Tonga, where the officers and crew received an enthusiastic welcome from both the native and European populations. From Tonga she went to Suva, and from there to Ocean Island, and the Gilbert and Ellice Groups. Returning to Suva, the Veronica joined the Laburnum, and the next few days were devoted to sporting activities between the two crews. Next the Veronica visited the Lav Group, whence she returned to Suva again. Final departure was taken from. Suva for Auckland on October 11. Wherever she went, the Veronica was welcomed by the inhabitants, the officers and crew being feted and entertained at feasts and dances. At Funafute the ship's reception was particularly inspiring. A number of canoes, covered with greenery as a sign of peace, came out to the sloop in half-1 moon formation, the local chief's canoe being in the centre. Songs of welcome greeted the white men. This welcome was unique in the experience of the majority of the ship's officers. The Imperial ratings' term, of service on the Veronica is nearing a close, and the men are looking forward to again seeing their wives and families. All are agreed, however, that their service on the Xew Zealand station has been most enjoyable. Before the warship's crew leave on their return voyage, a new crew will arrive from England.
