CONVERTING WASTE TO PROFIT.
» ■ SAWDUST, SHAVINGS AND COALDUST. One of the main needs in .these days of brisk competition is, that as far as possible, waste shall be eliminated. Anyone who has vifjited timber mills, or coal mines, must have been impressed with the fact that a lot of timber and coal goes to waste. In the North, there are towns that have been built on river flats reclaimed by the sawdust dumped from the timber mills. Occasionally after the cottages have been built, the sawdust deposit has caught fire, and the residents have had an anxious time. It is churned by a Seattle firm that the problem of wood waste has been satisfactorily solved. Waste sawdust and shavings can, it is asserted, be now conPerf6Ct fUel iD the *■■* As. far as eoaldust is concerned it is now claimed that it can be treated so as to make it of great value; a motor spirit can be extracted from eoaldust, and the residue converted into briquettes, which can be sold for fuel. Should both these processes prove to be a comemrcial success it means a big thing for two large industries all over the world.
