■ — ■ WHITE STAR LINE. "OFFICIAL NERVOUSNESS." LONDON, July. 18. The "Daily News" says the business circles in the city are mystified alt the abandonment of the negotiations, reported to have been finalised a month ago, by which a Bsjtish .syndicate, of which the principal interests were Fiirness, Withy and Co., Ltd., had agreed to ; purchase the ships of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Co., owners of the White Star Line, for £ 7,000,000. It is now disclosed that the Bank of England objected to the payment of sucb a large sum to America, fearing a prejudicial effect upon the sterling-dollar exchange. The city is now asking whether it is true that official nervousness hats stopped •the.-sale-, and prevented this fleet of transAtlantic and other deep-Hea liners from being added to the strength of Britain's mercantile marine.
