A SHOOTING PARTY.
ALLEGED THEFT OF GEESE. COURT PROCEEDINGS FOLLOW. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, Monday. The story of a shooting party from Dannevirke on Sunday, May 16, which tried its skill at Oringi on hares and wound up by chasing geese and taking them alive and dead was told in the Police Court to-day before three justices of the peace. Clifford Harris Thompson, a well-known local business man, was charged with stealing five geese, valued at £3, the property of Daniel Cullinane, and also with having stolen one goose valued at £1. Thompson had expressed regret for what had occurred, and £5 had been paid compensation. He took the blame for the actions of other members of the party, as he had led them to understand he had permission to take geese. Defendant, in evidence, said he believed from what had transpired on a previous occasion with one of the Cullinane brothers that he and memhers of the party were within their rights in taking geese. Defendant pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £50.
