ALLEGED THEFT.
CHARGE AGAINST YOUTH. At the Police Court yesterday afternoon a youth, whose age was given as 17 years and five months, was charged before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., with stealing a horse cover valued at 30/, and a horse valued at £50, the property of Joyce Mary Hunter. Mr. Goldstein asked that the case should be referred to the Children's Court, his Worship having discretionary power if an accused person were under 18 years of age. The accused was not normal, and at school lrad reached the third standard only. Accused would say that he was given the horse by another boy with instructions to sell it. He had .disposed of it for £3 10/, and had handed the proceeds to the other boy. Mr. Poynton said that he did not think that the Children's Court was intended for a charge as serious as horsestealing. Accused was remanded for a week, the magistrate stating that his name would be suppressed in the meantime.
