GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

SOUTHERN MARKETS. POTATOES REMAIN FIRM (By Telegraph.—Owe Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. At last report the potato market was ill an excited condition, prices having jumped, following a sudden drop, owing to a rush of offers from Sydney. At the enhanced figure of £9 a ton, merchants, except in a few instances, would not take up such offers, but suddenly Sydney operators withdrew their offers. In consequence, prices dropped by 10/ a ton in two days. Everything points to the action of the Sydney merchants having been taken by concerted design, and under this policy they are offering £8 a ton for July-August. The market has firmed again by 5/. Nothing has occurred since last week to suggest that Australia will not require at least 3000 tons of New Zealand potatoes a month. Wfaen the market slumped, over-sellers for July-September and August-Septem-ber did business as low as £7 10/ a ton f.o.b, s.i, but potatoes for these months are now worth from £7 15/ to £8. The demand for coastal shipment has improved, although Auckland considers it has sufficient supplies for June. For this month quotations now run from £6 10/ to £0 15/, and for July from £7 5/ to £7 10/. The oats market is very quiet For prompt, A's are worth 4/3 to 4/4 a bushel, f.0.b., s.i., and B's 4/; forward rates are unchanged. Danish cocksfoot has been quoted as low as 65/ c.i.f. Nothing else is worthy of report in the produce and seeds market. AUSTRALIAN FLOUR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Confirmation of a recent report thtit South Island interests were purchasing Australian flour for distribution in New Zealand, is supplied from the cargo manifest of the Sydney steamer Manuka, which is landing here an exceptionally large consignment of J2.000 sacks of flour from Australia.
