PETROL PUMPS.

PERMISSION TO ERECT. DEFINITE POLICY WANTED. A large number of applications for per- , mission to erect petrol pumps on the footpaths outside garage premises have been received by the City Council. Reporting on the matter to the City Council last evening, the city engineer stated that delivery of motor spirit in bulk was commencing on February 1, and as the k various companies supplying benzine were offering to install pumps and tanks free of cost, provided such pumps were used only for the sale of their products, also that this" would inevitably mean ■ applications being received in the"eases of large garages for the installation of two or more pumps for each garage, he considered that some definite policy must be arrived at by the Council. The Mayor moved that the whole matter should be referred to the Works Committee. Mr. S. I. Crookes: This is a most serious thing; in a very short time Auckland will have hundreds of pumps in the streets. Why, Auckland will be known as a "city of pumps" I think the policy should be reversed. Oarage proprietors should install a plant where ears can be served from the garages, and not from a footpath pump. Mr. M. J. Bennett: It is better to have a respectable pump than a lot of empty benzine tins hanging about. I'm for the respectable pump. The Mayor's motion was carried.
