HARD ON HORSES.

SHINY ROAD SURFACES. A CARRIERS , REQUEST. A request that the centre of Albert | Street, between Customs and Swanaon , Streets be prohibited for the parking of i vehicles to allow of the rough surface J being used by horse-drawn vehicles was I made to the City Council recently by [ the Auckland and Suburban General ' Carriers' Association. The association j also requested that arrangements bo made to sand the following streets daily: Hobson Street, from Customs to .Victoria Street; Pitt Street, from Victoria Street to Beresford Street; Anzac Avenue and Upper Symonds Street. When the City Council met last night a "'report 'from "the City' 'Engineer ' was" read, in which Mr. Bush stated that daily sanding of street surfaces should ] not be necessary unless horse-drawn I vehicles were overloaded. He did not I consider that the general public should be put to the inconvenience of the dust J which was inevitably caused by gritting I in dry weather because larger loads were placed on horse-drawn vehicles. It was a well-known fact that concrete roads showed the least resistance to traction of any street surface, but in the interests of horses excessive loads should not be placed upon carts or lorries so las to cause horses to slip. He added j that gritting or sanding of the streets was carried out whenever climatic conI ditions rendered it necessary. i The matter was referred to the Works 1 Committee.
