WELLINGTON, Thursday, j I A welcome, wonderful in its enthu- ! j siasm, was tended to Lord and Lady i Allenby to-day at the civic reception in j the Town Hall, when the Mayor, Mr. ! On the ; platform were members of the Ministry, I j and representatives of the Judiciary, j civic bodies, returned soldiers, and Gov- ' I eminent Departments. I As the visitors walked up the floor. of the hall, the organ burst forth, but it was quickly drowned by the storm i jof cheers from all parts of 'the building. ! J The Mayor said lie understood Lord j i Allenby's tour was a holiday, and this i j was not the time to rehearse the great j achievemenes of their visitor, but Wei- j ; lington honoured him as one of the j j Empire's greatest men, one who rose to I the ocrasion when his country was most ! ! in need. " j j The Minister of Defence, Mr. Rollea- ! J ton, expressed a welcome on behalf r.f ! j the Government. Other speakers were I j the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, City ' Councillor IT. D. Bennett and Mr. W. ! Fascoe, of tho Returned Soldiers' Asso- i ciation. i When Lord Allenby rose to reply there were again loud applause and ■ : cheers. He acknowledged the generous ■ welcome since his arrival in Wellington. ■ He had had the pleasure of meeting j many of those gallant warriors who \ carried through the campaign in Talcs- j tine and Syria. He had only ijeen ' thirty hours in the country, but had ! seen sufficient to say it was a' land i which should breed heroes. The war !, had shown the Mother Country what i she owed the Dominions, and vice versa, i The essence of the whole thing was great loyalty, not only to England, but i, to each other. ', At the end of the speech, the crowd • sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," !' cheers following with much enthusiasm, j 1
