N.Z. NURSERYMEN.
THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. COMPETITION OF THE STATE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The nineteenth annual conference of the New Zealand nurserymen opened this morning, fifty delegates being present. After the civic welcome, the conference was opened by the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour, who promised to refer the question of State competition with nurserymen in the sale of trees to the Minister of Agriculture. Mr. Anderson paid a tribute to the work of Sir Francis Bell and Sir lleaton Rhodes in connection with forestry. He suggested that until deer were entirely eliminated New Zealand forests were in danger of destruction. * The president (Mr. T. D. Jennie, of Christchurch) in an address contended that the fact that the successful i nurseryman was a small man was a strong argument against Government competition. He expressed the opinion that in some lines a decrease in the' prices of trees should be made. The new president is Mr. Thomas Waugh of Lower Hutt.
