GREY LYNN DOMAIN.

CITY'S NEW BREATHING AREA. THIRTY ACRES FOR PLAY. ALMOST BEADY FUR L'SF. Situated in what is locally known as j the Grey Lynn Gully there is to be found -,ie new domain which for a "-car has been in the course of preparation, and winch .- now almost completed. Previously known as Grey Lynn Park it contains approximately do acres of land. It was presented to the Grey Lynn Borough I ouncil in 1000 by t:ie Bank of New Zealand, and was added ro the city's breath ins spaces at the amalgamation of the Grey Lynn Borough and the city in 101 1. For some time about two a.-res of the ground has been in constant use by riie schools in the district for cricket and football, and it is that portion of the ground that lias yet to receive attention. The major portion of the area has been levelled, the banks have been cut away, and it is at present receiving i he finishing touches. The properry is bounded by seven streets, and public entrance will be gained from Williamson Avenue(he main ranee— Bail.ion Road and Rose Road. As soon as riie workmen have completed the levelling of the property it will be sown in grass, and. according to all accounts, this should be an accomplished fact within three weeks. In roe main tin l domain will be a children's playground, hut provision is to lie made for two football field-, tlu.-inir, the winter months. Later, and when riie ground has become more settled, cricket pitches may be laid down, but next season ii will only be used for practice marches. The banks will be cur. further in and so made that natural seats will be obtained. It is intended to plant a number of trees over the property, thus making for ample shade in this domain, which catches the sun throughout riie day. To facilitate the playing of games at night there have been erected several flood light?, a scheme that has come much into favour during the last few years. An interesting feature of the formation of this domain is the great amount of work that has been put into it. Operations were commenced over a year ago, and the property was then amply covered with hilly mounds and grasscovered slopes, making a. favourite rendezvous for the children. Since operations commenced an average of 2oft or filling has been placed over the entire area at present being improved. In some places as much as MOft of rilling was needed to bring the ground to the required level. There have been six men engaged on the work, and they have distributed over the property in the period of working 00.000 yard.- of earth. Although situated in a gully, the new domain lies clear of obstructions in the shape of houses, and receives the sun from early morning to .-unset. It will help to fill a. long-needed want in the district of Grey Lynn. and. when finally completed and sown in grass it will become a favoured haunt of the children. I The domain is easily reached from Ponsonby, -so that in reality it will .serve the children of both these large districts. Immediately the main portion of the domain has been completed a, start will be made on the improvements to that part which has already served as a playing ground for the children. Out "of grants totalling £10.000 for parks, the Auckland City Council has set aside £20."i for maintenance of the Grey Lynn Domain and £2300 for improvements.
