MURDER IN MELBOURNE.
CRIME IN A CAFE. A MAN SHOT DEAD. MELBOURNE, December 9. A sensational murder was committed in a city street to-day. Two electricians, Ernest Williams, aged 2.°>, and Jean Macliobcrtson, both Americans, were lunching at a cafe, when a man at a table near them told them Hot to smoke. I Words followed, and Williams then' left the table and walked outside. ! The man who had been arguing with him followed nini out and resumed the I altercation. I Finally, it is alleged, the stranger put! his hand in his hip pocket. Williams! aimed a blow at him and tried to grasp' the hand the man had thrust into his j pocket. ! The stranger is said to have pulled out ' n revolver wrapped in a handkerchief from "his pocket and to have fired at Williams. • j The bullet pierced Williams' heart, and he fell dead. j The stranger ran away, but a con-! stable, who was sitting in a shop on the 1 apposite side of the road and had seen j the occurrence, pursued and arrested him. Later. William R. Wallace, of ' Melbourne, was charged with murder—(A and >\Z. Cable.) MURDERED IN DAYLIGHT. INEXPLICABLE FEROCITY. ■ I I (Received 1 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Williams was murdered in daylight in a crowded street. When Wallace left the restaurant Williams accosted him and asked him to I apologise. The men struggled, and Wallace kicked Williams on the body, then drew back and shot him. He made no determined effort to escape.
