JAZZ MUSIC.

M • ' ,£?., (To the Editor.) .jf-.Sir,—Your correspondent, 'B. A. Truebridge, is apparently not' fond of jazz. 3sell, may we consider a few facts? There as undoubtedly great-beauty: in classical .music, and just as surely there is hardly 10 per cent of the public who understand ■or appreciate it. In the realm of music there is, I believe, more, hypocrisy, than in all the other arts combined. People will go to a recital where they bear something akin to a saw being drawn across a piece of timber (only more musical), probably sleep through han "the performance, and come out extolling the beauties of the symphony, and the ■f 'tone colour" and "form" your correspondent mentions. I am strongly of the opinion that the 90 per cent who do not appreciate the classics, with but few exceptions, never will do so. However, .he great majority of people do appreciate jazz, and get a vast amount of .njoyment from it. There is certainly genius in jazz, though, as in the classics, 'there are those unable to appreciate it. I. am of the opinion that the old "masters" could not have produced a .good present-day jazz if they had wanted .Jto, just as I have seen it demonstrated ..that the classical musician is unable to i3B*y one. Your correspondent's analogy Mtween music and literature has sug\mß&f one between music and acting. ffiftt they Se I°, ?™» «w»e people Men be The I t **T » »°« 'mabgners-that s „r._- and its £§»_ of musical er^ 3 d so^ ««*f jgrasp?
