GALE IN NETHERLANDS.
DEATH AND DEVASTATION. MANY PEOPLE KILLED. THOUSANDS HOMELESS. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) THE HAG-UE, August 12. The East Netherlands were swept by a terrific thunderstorm, causing loss of life and much damage to property. DetaiU are meagre, as telegraphic and telephonic comunication in interrupted. Four were killed and 100 injured in the village of Borculo, where the typhoon lasted for several minutes. The towers of two churches were blown down. Not a single house escaped. The village of Ncede was also destroyed. Serious damage is reported from Didam, Doetinchem, Ofdenzaal, Hengelo, and all Eastern Gelderland. During the hurricane an aeroplane crashed into a Catholic asylum at Eurlo, killing three people. Borculo, with 5000 inhabitants, 2000 of whom are now homeless, was apparently the storm centre. The burgomaster asked for troops and i foodstuffs. The Governor of Gelderland j arrived at Borculo afoot, as all the roads were impassable to vehicles on account of fallen trees. The damasre is estimated at over 1,000,000 florins.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
TEN VILLAGES SWEPT.
A FIVE MINUTES' BLOW. LONDON, August 12. The Amsterdam correspondent of the "Daily Express" says the deaths from the typhoon are still unknown,, but at least 300 were injured and thousands homeless. The storm devastated at least ten villages apart from Borculo. Sixty new houses at Langeboon were blown away in five minutes. One church is a heap of ruins. The towers of two churches at Borculo were blown down; yet five minutes after the storm the weather was calm.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
