AFFAIRS OF WIST HAM.
POOR RELIEF IN EXCEL SIS.
LONDON, August 10. The "Daily Express" states that owing to the gross extravagance and defiant attitude of the West Ham Board of Guardians, the Cabinet ia discussing a suggestion that the board should be suspended and that the Minister of Health (Mr. Neville Chamberlain)* should take over its functions. The board's accounts are said to show |a deficit of £434,000. It ia stated that it owes the Ministry of Health £1,540,000 for loans and interest. The board has now come to the end of its tether, and cannot raise more loans. All appeals for the economic administration of the poor law have been fruitless. The West Ham district covers Leyton, Walthamstow, and Wanstead. Eelief is being paid to 68,495 persons. The maximum is 00/ per week. The weekly relief given is sometimes more than the wages paid in the district. West Ham rates are now 24/ in the f, the poor rate alone amounting to 9/. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
