POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S,M.) .Tames Victor McDuff (46) pleaded guilty to assaulting James Arthur Reid yesterday, and striking him violently on the side of the head. It was stated that McDuff was on probation for twelve months for false pretences. He was fined 40/, in default seven days. ONLY BATHING A WOUND. John G-ale (50), who said he was on the Royal Hotel premises yesterday for the purpose of bathing a wound, was fined 40/, in default seven days, for being found in the first corridor in possession of a stolen towel and a tin of condensed milk, of a total value of 0/, the property of John O'Riellv, licensee of the Royal Hotel. Evidence was given that accused was found in the corridor with his pockets bulging, and he got away down the fire escape, but was caught in the lounge. 21 DAYS FOR THEFT. John Harold Davies (30) admitted the theft of a cardigan jacket, a gent'g felt hat and two vanity cases, the property of the Commonwealth Shipping line. Chief Detective Cummings said accused was a wharf labourer. He had £200 in the Auckland Savings Bank, and £252 in the Post Office Savings I3ank; and had £1250 in property at Mount Albert, and £800 in a farm uf North. He was a single man with he dependents. Mr. Hunt, commented that ii was not a case for a fine, and sentenced accused to 21 days' imprisonment. BREACH OF PROBATION. William James Trainer (26) was fined £5, and ordered to take out a prohibi tion order on a charge of committing i breach of his probation order. Chief Detective Cummings saic accused was a good worker, but wbulc not report. The probation officer hac been searching for him for months, and had been given no end of trouble.
