COLLISION IN CHANNEL.
THE WAINUI MISHAP.
FINDING OF THE COURT
LAUNCH OWNER TO BLAME
A nautical inquiry into the collision between the Union Company's coastal steamer Wainiii and the steam launch Iris Eileen in Rangitoto Channel, on the night of July 7. was held yesterday, Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. presiding. Captains R. Lewis and D. H. Cambridge acted as assessors. Mr. Meredith appeared for the superintendent of marine, Mr. Haigh for the Union Company, Mr. A. Moody for the master of the Wainui, and Mr. Mays for the master of the launch. Evidence was given by. Captain S. A. Chatfiekl, master of the Wainui, and Albert Lawrence O'Brien, master and owner of the Iris Eileen. This morning the Court delivered the following decision: — "The Court is of the opinion that the collision was caused by the master of the Iris Eileen failing to port his helm when he became aware that the Wainui was turning and showing all navigation lights, there being ample time for him so to do. Also the master of the Iris Eileen failed to observe the regulations for the prevention of ocllisions at sea. The Court is further of opinion that Rangitoto beacon being the recognised turning point, it behoves incoming launches to exercise great care at this point. Xo order is made as to costs, and we order the certificate of the master of the Wainui to be returned."
