MAIN THAMES-WAIKATO ROAD.

DANGER OF A BLOCKAGE. DIFFICULTY OF RAISING LOAN. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, Wednesday. At the annual re-union of suppliers of the Norfolk Co-operative Dairy Company it was stated that at this time last j year, the main Thames-Waikato Road was I impassable to traffic at Motuinaoho owing to over a mile not having been metalled. Since then a loan had been raised and the gap metalled, but, accordj ing to Mr. F. VV. Walters (chairman of ! the Piako County Council), there is a. 1 prospect of another portion becoming I impassable by next year. This portion lis a stretch of' about five miles of I metalled road between Motumaoho and Morrinsville, the road at present being full of pot holes and breaking up very quickly. Mr. Walters referred to this aie "future bog." He said that if nothing were done to the road it would be ! literally a bog next year. The riding member (Mr. W. F. Stark), had endeavoured to define a rating area for the purpose of raising a metalling loan, but there was npt sufficient ratepayers on the road to warrant them going in for a great deal of expenditure. One alternative was to pay half of the cost of construction of the road out of the general county funds but he did not think this to be an equitable solution. „ He considered the only practicable way was for the ratepayers on the road to !pay special rates to the extent of what another rating area, at Motumaoho, was I P a J*Jng and for the Highways Board to a find the balance of the money. He mainI tianed that the Main Highways Act I should be altered so that the Highways I Board could contribute from 50 to 100 I per cent, of the cost of construction. 1 He considered that .the Highways Board I should find about 75 per cent, of the I cost of the portion of highway between 1 Morrinsville and Motumaoho. 1 i " ■
