A STUPID HOAX.
! I \ ! SHAM CALL FOR HELP. [ GOVERNMENT STEAMER STOPPED. I Captain J. Bollons, of the Govern- ; ment steamer Tutanekai, on arrival at Wellington on Monday lafet, reported that some campers on the beach near Terawhiti station on Saturday night apparently thought it good fun to cause his vessel to stop by signalling with "a Morse lamp the word "Help" to the | ship. I The Tutanekai was returning after I taking his Excellency the Governor- ! General to Nelson. When off Terawhiti I station at 8.30 p.m. a large fire waa ! observed on the beach, and someone I ashore signalled "Help" by Morse code ! 1 with a lamp. The ship's wireless ; j operator and the two officers read the I I word two or three times. The vessel I was turned round, and; standing in ! close at the back of Karori Rock, sent I a reply by Morse. I . The people on the beach put out the I fire and made no reply to the signal. j Captain Bollons points out the danger- : ous folly of such pranks, as a shipmaster may be inclined to believe that a real call for help is merely a stupid hoax."
