AFFAIRS IN CHINA.
ANTI-FOREIGN ACTIVITY. NO 6IGN OF SETTLEMENT. LONDON, August 4. A lengthy dispatch from Shanghai is published to-day in the "Daily Express." This etates that the general strike continues and that the operations of British manufacturers are practically at a standstill. Student agitators are very active in all direction's. The Chinese newspapers are publishing lists of banned British articles. The foreign settlement remains calm although a renewal of hostilities is feared. The leaders of British commerce at Shanghai lay stress on the urgent need for a settlement of the outstanding issues.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.),, TWO NURSES CAPTURED. POLICE PROTECT HOSPITAL. (Received 2 p.m.) PEKING, August 4. A mob raided the hospital at Hangchow, capturing two male nurses, who were rescued without serious injury. The Chinese police are now protecting the hospital.— (Reuter.)
