The veteran professional golfer, Wl, Macfarlane, of Tuckahoe, Xew York, won the national open golf championship of the United States on Friday. He defeated Robert Jones, of Atlanta, by 72 to 73 on tbe eighteenth hole. Yesterday morning's round ended in a tie, 75 all. The players again tied in the afternoon at the end of 72 holes, with 1 291 each. This necessitated their playing a further 18 holes yesterday. At the Sydney Stadium last evening, Harry Collins defeated Tommy Uren in the fifth round for the middle-weight championship of Australia. The end was not expected, as at the time L'ren was ahead on points. Toward the end of the round Collins hooked a heavy left to the temple, and Uren fell just as the gong sounded. He was unable to resume, and the towel was skied. At the Melbourne Stadium Grime easily beat Congress on points in a 12-round bout.— (A. and X.Z. Cable.) TOM GIBBONS KNOCKED OUT. XEW Y"ORK, June 7. The American light-heavy-weight champion. Gene Tunney. knocked out Tommy C.ibhons in the 12th round of their contest on Friday. Tunney kept up an aggressive attack throughout. After a minute of fighting in the 12th round he landed a crushing right on Gibbons' jaw. Gibbons fell heavily, and was hardy able to rise before the count of ten. Tunney rushed at his opponent with another right, which landed flush to the jaw, and Gibbons was counted out. This is the first occasion on which Gibbons has suffered a knock-out. Tunnev turned the scale at 1811b. and Ribbons 'at 179ilb.—(Renter.)
