SHARP SOU-WESTERLY.
COLD SNAP IN THE CITY. ~-~~~ j HEAVY GALE AT SEA. j LARGE STEAMERS DELAYED. ' Even the hardened individuals who indulge in football, hockey and other winter games, found the chilly showers of Saturday afternoon rather too cold to be comfortable, and declared it the coldest Saturday of the season. A sharp sou-westerly had blown up on Friday night, and on the following day a fresh gale was experienced throughout the province. Yesterday the wind increased in force, and a number of short sharp squalls passed over the city, while the temperature, especially in the evening, brought the thermometer below the 50 degrees mark. Very little improvement took place to-day, and at ten o'clock, after the blue sky had filled many people with hopes of a change, a particularly cold snap broke over Queen Street and its neighbourhood and poured a good sprinkling of hailstones on the roofs and pavements. Reports from ships at eea indicate that they are experiencing heavy weather, and the 1100 people who are passengers on the three liners, Makura. Suffolk and Corinthic, must be looking forward a little anxiously to their arrival in the sheltered waters of the Waitemata. The Makura will be the first to drop anchor. She is coming from Vancouver and Suva, and since leaving Suva at 3 p.m. on Friday last has run. into a fresh southerly gale with high head seas, prolonging the trip by six Jiours. According to the latest wireless ; message she arrives at 6.30 p.m. 1 The Suffolk, previously expected at ! mid-day to-day, sends out a radio that the southerly gale will prevent her from reaching port until 2 p.m. tomorrow from Liverpool. Her 364 immigrants will therefore have an extra night at sea. Tho Corinthic, though she has not '"spoken" to the Auckland wireless station to-day, is also expected to be late in arrival, and may not reach here until after 10 a.m. to-morrow.
