FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES. PRIME MINISTERS ASSURANCE. EVERYTHING PROHIBITED. (By Telegraph. —Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. An assurance that everything is beinij done to prevent the introduction of foot and mouth disease from California was given in the House this afternoon by Mr. W. F. Massey in the absence of the Hon. W. Nbsworthy, Minister of Agriculture. The question was raised by Hon. D. Buddo, who referred to Sir. Nosworthy's previous statement that he intended to issue an Order-in-Couneil preventing the arrival of Californian onions in the Dominion, and asked if steps were being taken to prevent straw, hay or packing material or other produce, from Californian soil coming in to New Zealand. Mr. Massey said every practical farmer realised what a calamity and disaster it would be if foot and mouth disease came into the country. The Minister of Agriculture had had to stand up to applications from people unwise enough to suggest that they should be allowed to bring in substances from the soil of California. Nothing of that sort had taken place. Hon. Buddo: Has everything been prohibited. Mr. Massey: Yes, and will be prohibited till all danger is passed.
