TOURNAMENT AT WHANGAREL
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Wednesday. A very successful amateur boxing tournament, under the auspices of the Wha- i ngarei Amateur Boxing Association, and ! promoted primarily by the Municipal Band yueen Committee, was held in Uie Winter Show building last night. Besides local aspirants, contestants were drawn from Dargavllle, Kaikohe, and Portland. Undoubtedly the star bout of the evening was a light-weight three rounds between Wells i (0.8), of Whangarel, and Munro (10.0), of Dargaville. The former had the advantage of height and reach, but was up against a vefy stocky proposition. Both lads mixed, it willingly, broke clean, and were little trouble to the referee. It was one of the best "amateur light-wight Contests seen in Whangarcl for many a day, and provided proper training is undertaken, the next meeting between the pair will prove a 6ure draw. Mr. W. Palmer refereed all the matches, and his decisions met with general approval. Results:— BANTAMS. McKenzie (8.2) got the decision on points from Hunter (8.2), both of Whangarel. A lot of wild swinging was indulged in. McDonald (5.2), Dargaville, won on a foul in the second round, after a tame exhibition with Nicholson (7.13). of Portland. Semi-Final. —Hawkins (5.4), DargavUle, beat McDonald (8.2), also of Dargaville, on points. There was nothing outstanding. Final.—McKenzie won by default from Hawkins. " A special paper-weight, three rounds, between A. Lacy (6.6), of Whangarei, and M. Russ (6.6), of Kaikohe, saw the decision go to Lacy by a narrow margin. Both lads were ovated. CATCH-WEIGHT. Whitfield (10.0). Whangarei, met Dwyer (10.9), also of Whangarel. After three rounds of hard hitting the referee could not separate them, and declared it a draw. FEATHER-WEIGHT. C. Cnssi.l (9.0). Whangarel, beat T. Uawkin 1.9.0), Dargaville, on points. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. - Saddler (0.2), Whangarei. got the decision on points over Bignell (0.6), Whangarei, by a very narrow margin. Wells (9.8), Whangarei, beat Munro (10.0). Dargaville, on points after the best bout of the evening. > MIDDLE-WEIGHT. Edwards (11.3), Portland, beat Beam (10.12) also of Portland, tbe towel being skied at the opening of the second round. A pretty exhibition between Claude Lacey (4.10),, Whangarel. and Tim Cotter (4.5) was popular with the audience. A draw was the right verdict, as these boxers in the making had evidently put in a lot of study of the game.
