GOLDEN WEDDING.

> » I Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Jackson, of 31, Baildon Road, Grey 1/ynn, celebrated ■ their golden wedding anniversary at a I family gathering and reception on Wed- . needay. Mr. Jackson came to Auckland t a 'boy of 13 in the ship Eveline, in i January, 18(34. The (Maori War. was ' raging then, and Auckland was j practically a military camp. Accommo- , dation 6ould not be obtained, so the Goven&nent quartered the immigrants in tents at Onehunga. The Maoris had J recently succeeded in wiping out a detachment of the 65th Regiment at Shepherd's Bush, and flushed with their success, came down the head waters of 1 the Manukau to land at Mangere, where their dances and hakas could be plainly seen by the anxious new arrivals. How- ■ ever, the Maoris thought discretion the better part of valour, and contented themselves with making a demonstration and going back home again. In 1874 Mr. Jackson married a daughter of Mr. George Ross, a settler of Otahuhu, at St. Mark's Church, Remucra, the ceremony being performed by the Yen. lArchdacon Pritts, and the couple have resided in Auckland ever since. There are ten surviving children of the marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were the recipients of numerous presents and congratulatory telegrams and letters from a wide circle of friends.
