BANKRUPT FARMER.
COALMINE AMONG ASSETS. When a meeting of his creditors was held at the Official Assignee's olliee. Auckland, yesterday, Lawrence Johnstone, farmet-, Dominion Road, failed to put in an appearance. Mr. W. S. Fisher said he the creditors, whereupon one of those present declared that on two previous occasions last November Johnstone had not turned up, but had afterwards gone to Tauranga to contest the election. The Official Assignee read a letter from Johnstone to the effect that he hoped the Ohura coalfield would be saved from the wreck. A creditor mentioned that Johnstone declared the coalfield was worth £100,000. The Official Assignee said Johnstone had sent a medical certificate that he was ill and unable to attend to business. Two creditors declared they had seen Johnstone in town this week, and the previous evening one of them urged him to face his creditors. "If you write a kindly letter to the bankrupt 1 am sure ho will come to the next meeting,' , this creditor remarked to Air. Fisher. The Official Assignee promised to write Johnstone, and the meeting was adjourned for a fortnight.
