"UNREASONABLE REQUEST."
GRANT OF £72,000 WANTED. HON..PARRS DIFFICULTIES. (By Telegraph. —Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The difficulties facing the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education in meeting demands upon the Department were illustrated to-day when a deputation of one hundred parents and the headmistress of the Wellington Girls' High School waited on him and urged the necessity of a grant for a new girls' high school. The proposal was that a 6ite purchased by the Government at .£SOOO should be used for an additional school. Mr. Parr said it was unreasonable to ask for £72,000 for one school in one year. He aijreed that it was unsatisfactory that five temporary sheds had to be used at present, 700 girls being in the school proper. The case was a pressing one. but he thought the deputation should be satisfied if the Government was able to maKe a substantial start with the building this year. Representations for more secondary schools woudl be coming from Christchurch and Auckland. The Prime Minister, who was asked by the deputation to make the grant, promised consideration when making the Estimates. ONEHUNGA GRANT APPROVED. Information has been eiven Mr. Jordan (Manukau) by the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education, that a substantial grant will be made for rebuilding the Onehunga infant school building, burned down a year ago. The children have been housed in temporary buildings. The Education Board lias been notified of the grant, and requested to undertake the new building as speedily as possible.
